Montgomery takes second place at Fifth Annual Junior Shootout
|Jon Montgomery, a sophomore at South Stokes, shot a 153 over two days and earned second place in his age group at the Fifth Annual Junior Shootout on March 21-22.|
Montgomery shot a 77 on the first day and a 76 on the second for a total score of 153. He said he wasn't really nervous in his second American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) event. After getting through the normal "first-hole jitters," he said he was fine.
Golfers from Finland, Germany, Sweden, the United States and other places around the world competed in the two-day event, and the length of the course and the windy conditions made play difficult on the south and west courses at Myrtle Beach National.
The Junior Shootout is the second major junior event in which Montgomery has competed this year. He finished in the top 20 last month at the Ballentyne Junior Open in Charlotte.
Montgomery said the Junior Shootout and events like it provide a great opportunity to measure himself against golfers from around the world.
"It was really cool. You learn that you can actually play with these guys from around the world and not just guys from your county," said Montgomery, adding that taking the second spot in Myrtle Beach was nice. "It means a lot and gives me confidence to know that I can go out next time and hang with these guys."
Montgomery is currently scheduled to play in three AJGA national events this spring and summer.
